19th-20th Century Public Perception
As demonstrated in the 1885-1886 Anti-Chinese Riots on Seattle, Wash., Many Americans did not take kindly to immigrants coming into their country. Many workers felt that they were losing their jobs to cheaper immigrant labor, and that the new immigrants were taking away jobs Americans deserved. The Chinese Exclusion Act and President Roosevelt's "Gentleman's Agreement" with Japan are examples of Americans attempting to exclude Asian workers.
