19th-20th Century Social Issues
While much of America was successful and vibrant, many immigrants found that the country was not the paradise they had been led to believe.
Immigrants who were new to the country found work for large companies, usually for below minimum wage. Immigrants usually settled in areas with most of their fellow countrymen. It became common to see all the Mexican, Irish, and German immigrants group together based on nationality. |
Because of this segregation, resentment soon grew between already native Americans and immigrants. Racism and prejudices were common in this time, and it would be many years before America became more accepting of new immigrants.
