Immigrant Restriction League
The Immigrant Restriction League was
founded in 1894 in Boston, Massachusetts. It's purpose was to stop the immigration of southern and eastern Europeans to the US. The league was afraid that the immigrants would take jobs from Americans, and bring crime and poverty with them and integrate it into American culture. The league had friends in high places, and introduced many bills to congress that limited immigration. "The objects of this League shall be to advocate and work for the further judicious restriction or stricter regulation of immigration, to issue documents and circulars, solicit facts and information on that subject, hold public meetings, and to arouse public opinion to the necessity of a further exclusion of elements undesirable for citizenship or injurious to our national character." - Immigrant Restriction League Constitution |
