In the Early 21st century, Many changes were instated into the Immigration system.
1986- The Immigration Reform And Control Act of 1986 allows illegal aliens who had lived in the U.S. for at least 4 years the opportunity to become legal citizens.
1990- The Immigration Act of 1990 allowed a maximum of 700,000 immigrants into the united states for the next three years, and a maximum of 675,000 in all years after.
1995- Proposition 187 passed by the State of California mandated that doctors were not allowed to give care to illegal immigrants. The bill was later repealed because it was found to be unconstitutional.
1996- Welfare Reform Reconciliation Act reduces the availability of government aid to illegal immigrants.
Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act increases the restrictions on entering the U.S. , and makes it easier to deport those who try to enter without the proper paperwork. This was instated as a response to the bombing of the World Trade Center by terrorists.

2002- U.S. Patriot Act is passed by Congress. Among other things, it put many restrictions on immigration into the United States, making it more difficult to travel into the U.S.
